This Acoustic Friday we are featuring Machines Never Forget.
Machines Never Forget is an indie rock band known for their eclectic sound and heartfelt performances. Formed in 2014 by high school friends Nicholas Defex (Nick Okeefe) and Ryan Wickham, the band has evolved through various lineups to reach its current formation, featuring Nicholas on guitar and vocals, Ryan on drums and vocals, and Vince Comanda on bass and vocals.
The band's journey began in high school, where Nicholas and Ryan bonded over their shared love for music in their school's guitar club. Initially playing in different bands, they eventually began writing songs together. Machines Never Forget's first lineup played a modest gig outside a pizzeria, but it wasn't until 2016, with Ryan taking up drums, that the band began to solidify. The final piece fell into place in 2018 when Vince joined as the bassist, completing the trio.
Machines Never Forget’s musical style is a melting pot of the members' diverse tastes, blending elements from electronica, hip hop, post rock, and art rock. Influenced by bands like Modest Mouse, Built to Spill, and The Smashing Pumpkins, they create a sound that is both unique and familiar.
Nicholas, the band’s lead singer and guitarist, is primarily self-taught, with some formal training from local music shops. Ryan, the drummer, has extensive formal training, having majored in music at TCNJ and learned a variety of instruments, including upright bass and classical guitar. Vince, the bassist, also brings a wealth of experience with formal training in bass and piano, and self-taught skills in drums.
